Subsequent tasks using DRAW and Corel PHOTO-PAINT proved less troublesome, although there is a definite lag in performance, especially when you’re doing something relatively sophisticated with high-res images. The first time I used CorelDRAW 2020 to perform something as basic as an image crop, Windows hung and the whole Chromebook needed to be rebooted. The experience wasn’t always so smooth in the more demanding Corel apps. Typing in Word has a miniscule lag and when you start to do things like drag high-res images into documents, performance can stutter, but for day-to-day tasks the Pixelbook could cope. If you’re doing nothing particularly strenuous in those Office applications, things work fine. To that end Parallels provided a Windows 10 desktop with the full Microsoft Office suite and applications such as Corel Paint installed. Things such as macros or Sparklines in Excel spreadsheets, or your favorite image-editing app. The idea of having Windows on a Chromebook is so that you can use those apps or features that aren’t supported in Chrome OS or Android (Chromebooks can now run Android apps). With all that on the table, let’s talk about performance.
